Upcycling, unlike recycling or downcycling, is repurposing an existing material into a new product that holds a value higher than it's previous use (hence the 'up' cycle). The wizardry of local designer WOAT has done just that. He finds netted grocery bags (lemon, orange, onion) and melts them with other soft plastic trash to create a brand new material.
Once Jasper of WOAT has worked his magic, we put the new material through Into Carry's hand crafted manufacturing process. What pops out the other side is a preemo carry bags made from the trashiest of trash; soft plastic.
THE BAG: Min Sidebag - An Into Carry staple. Perfect for: Phone, wallet, keys, mask, coins, chargers, lip balm etc. *each bag is a one-off piece so will alter in design slightly.

Really enjoyed this workshop. I'd already done the intro courses and the five week program, and this one still challenged me — but in a good way, I came away with plenty of new skills. The bag I made turned out better than I expected, genuinely spectacular. Luke is great at what he does — patient, encouraging, and good at giving just enough direction to make sure everyone gets their bag finished. Happy to recommend it. I made the Midi Messenger bag on the Left. Luke had already made the mlarger bag.
Loved this weekend. Having already done the custom bag course, I needed a reason to continue learning and making bags. I took up the opportunity to make messenger bags as I had already bought the kit but yet to start. Luke was patient and helpful especially with the instructions. I made these bags for my brothers but will return to unleash more creativity with my own bag in the near future.
Super interesting and engaging. I already had some sewing experience, but learning to patch pieces together with top stitching was a new skill to me. Watching everything come together over the term was so cool, I was so excited for class every week. And of course a big thanks to Saskia for all the guidance and encouragement, she was a wonderful teacher.
Great idea, and the finished bag is sturdy, practical, attractive, and unique. The instructions are clear. Sewing the material is a bit different to sewing fabric, so there is a learning curve, but it's well worth it.
My daughter and her support worker loved the class and the bags they made!!!!

I recently completed the Custom Frame Bag (for bikes) workshop at Into Carry. I learnt so much from Luke and Saskia. They are very knowledgeable and extremely patient. I feel confident enough now to try my luck with other recycled material bags. I also completed a mini messenger kit bag at home. It's my favourite bag. You should definitely get one of those after you try an in-person workshop. Highly, highly recommend.

The Custom Bag Making Workshop was honestly one of the highlights of my year so far! Saskia and Brittany were the best facilitators you could ask for🙌🏼 Their passion and expertise in upcycling made the whole process super inspiring yet approachable. I had a blast with the Sunday arvo crew and walked away with an unique snazzy bag… I will be missing this and cannot wait to continue my upcycling journey.

A great afternoon learning to use a machine, understanding how different fabric work, and then putting together my own design. The team were really supportive and helpful. I was so excited to receive my completed back and get a number of compliments everywhere I go. I simply love my satchel. Totally recommend the workshop.

LOVED everything about this day! I have told everyone i know to do themselves a favor and attend a workshop!! I did the 4 hour, Make a bag out of a pair of jeans workshop. Loved it soooo much, cant wait to do another!

I had such an amazing experience at the Into Carry workshop. It was my first time sewing, and Saskia and Luke were incredibly patient and supportive throughout the process. They took the time to help everyone feel comfortable and confident, which made the whole experience so enjoyable. I’m really grateful for how welcoming and encouraging they were. I learned so much and had a great time — highly recommend! especially if you’re planning to start learning sewing but feel like it might be hard, or even if you’re just looking for a fun, fulfilling activity to do with friends or family.
