💼 Learning Outcomes
We cover several sewing techniques and two methods of bag construction. Each week we focus on one or two new learnings and processes. From concept design to edge finishes, you have options to tailor each to your design under guidance from our expert facilitators. Key learnings include:
- Key Sewing Skills. Learn and practice the skills required to create this custom bag framework on a domestic sewing machine (includes sewing fundamentals for those who are new to sewing).
- How to Design a Bag. Explore key methods to find new ideas and bring your upcycling concepts into reality. Including functional considerations on bag size and shape, how to pair various materials together and considerations for the hierarchy of each bag component. Including bag lining, pockets, strap & assembly options for different materials.
- Bag Pattern Making. Learn this accessible and highly adaptable bag pattern making framework. Once you've moved through this process, you'll be able to tailor it to new shapes, materials and sizes for new custom bag iterations.
- Choosing the Right Material. Learn what to look for when selecting materials to create bags with so you can continue exploring new materials after the course.
-
Bag Construction & Process of Assembly. Learn how to format your bag components process of assembly based on the materials and edge finishes your design requires.
-
Bag Finishings. Learn different material edge finishes based on your materials, plus various functional hardware options and applications.
♻️ Upskill Learning Format
Our process is not a rigid rulebook. It’s a series of adaptable guidelines that empower creative problem solving at each step. This approach embeds each learning as a framework to deepen your understanding of the process and allow you to move through it with different materials and designs to yield new product outcomes.

FAQ - Curved Bag Making
The Curved Bag Making Course is designed for all skill levels. We begin with a series of practical sewing exercises to get everyone comfortable with the techniques required to make the bag. Most classes have a mix of new and experienced sewers. Your Into Carry facilitators will help you tailor your bag design to meet you at your skill level.
We're all busy! If you can't make the first or second session of the five week course, we recommend you wait for the next course as these lessons cover a lot of practical learnings that make it hard to catch up on. The last three sessions are sewing and assembly, so if you are unable to attend one of these, we can find you a space in another class or we can find an alternative time when Luke or another facilitator are in the studio for you to come and use the sewing machines :)
Key learnings and benefits are:
- Learn bag pattern making so you can create your own custom bag designs
- Work with alternative materials so you can buy less fabric and use more waste materials in your sewing projects
- Build your own bag from scratch to understand the importance of designing the bags process of assembly
- Explore different material edge finishes so you can make wasted materials look clean and crisp
- Design and sew your own bag so you can tell all your friends how amazing your sewing skills are :)
- Be guided by two expert upcycling facilitators so you can ask questions specific to your skill level and bag making creative interests
- Learn beside 9 other upcycling champions so you can connect with like minded change-makers
This course is our favourite bag making style because the bag styles options are so diverse! You can make anything from practical messenger bags to cute lil' clutches.
