BAG MAKING 101 // In Person // Design + Create Carrywear
Learn how to make a handbag or shoulder bag using a domestic sewing machine. We teach several key techniques before designing your own patterns (that you can take home) and bringing your bag design to life.
Personalise the size, style, materials, pockets, attachments and strap to your liking. Then! You'll have the skills to do it again and again and again.
✂️ HOW WE TEACH: Our tailored teaching process is designed to prompt creativity and help guide you through the bag design process. From creative inception right through to finishing your last seam, we will guide you step by step through the process so you're confident to go out upcycling on your own.
♻️ WASTE MATERIALS: We have a LOT of overlooked materials here at the studio. If you have a particular material you would like to upcycle, please bring it in! We love exploring new materials. Otherwise, we have an abundance of banners, denim, sleeping bags, upholstery fabric, tarps, workwear and other random goodies here. Note: if you would like to use soft plastic in your design, you can create your own at home with our online tutorial and bring it into class (you won't need this material until week 3).
💚 BAGS & CREATIVE OUTCOMES: We cover several sewing techniques and two methods of bag construction. Then we guide you through the design thinking and decision making processes to turn one-off waste materials into functional carry wear.
- Key sewing construction technique samples that you can apply to various projects.
- Your bag pattern pieces.
- Your finished shoulder bag / handbag (whichever you decide).
💼 LEARNING OUTCOMES: Our focus is to teach you the principles so you can continue to design and create after class. To do this we guide you through the specific process of your bag while providing context on how it could be different for different materials. Over the five weeks you learn the following skills:
- Sewing fundamentals (including sewing machine troubleshooting)
- Textile upcycling basics (designing with waste, reusing scraps, repairing damages)
- Design thinking (reimagining material uses, bringing value to overlooked materials)
- Bag pattern making (how to break down a shape into flats)
- Textile edge finishing techniques for different materials
- Bag lining techniques for different materials
- Strap design and finishing for different materials
- Pocket design and construction
🚀 CLASS FORMAT: Each week consists of one two hour class, for five weeks. Each class focuses on a different learning outcome so you can continue to tackle waste with your own projects at home.
- Class runs 6.30pm-8.30pm
- 5 Weeks of 2 hour classes
- No prior sewing skills required (but plz tell us if you've not sewn before)
- We have an abundance of waste here but BYO waste material is welcomed
- Each student will have their own sewing machine to practice on (you're welcome to BYO machine)
WHO IT'S FOR: Whether you are curious about upcycling or you're a seasoned veteran, this course is designed for all skill levels to thrive. Each class has two teachers guiding you through the processes but you're in control of how much detail and complexity you want to include. It's your bag, your design, they're your new skills!
