UPSKILL+UPCYCLE BAG MAKING // In Person Course
Looking to learn fundamental skills to repair and upcycle textiles at home. Look no further. For this course, no prior sewing skills are required, all you need is a hate for landfill and a thirst to bring materials back to life.
Over five lessons we cover key sewing techniques you can apply to damaged, misshaped or worn-down textiles (and the weird and wonderful materials like BBQ covers, billboards and tarps).
✂️ BAGS & CREATIVE OUTCOMES:
Over the five weeks, we cover and handful of practical textile repair and customisation skills so you can fix and style existing garments. These techniques are great for repairs but also lend themselves to styling and embellishing a wide variety of waste materials.
Once we've got these techniques on the tool belt, we guide you through the sizing, utility and order of assemble for your perfect tote bag or market bag. Following our pattern guidelines, you have full control on the specifications of the design and process, so you can learn the decisions and troubleshooting required when working with various waste materials (including, but not limited to textiles, tarps, banners, plastics). 🌍 LEARNING OUTCOMES:
Over the five weeks you learn the following fundamental sewing and repair skills:
- How to operate, thread and troubleshoot a domestic sewing machine
- Sewing and joining seams on various (trash) materials
- Straps from scraps. How to sew straps from various materials
- Hemming (pant legs etc)
- Domestic Machine Repair Techniques (mending splits or reinforcing worn textiles)
- Applique & Reverse Applique (patching and styling holes)
Fundamental textile upcycling techniques:
- Decorative Stitches & Embellishment (add pattern, style and texture to repairs)
- Creating sewable patches from waste materials
- Pattern guidelines for customisable bucket/tote/market bag
♻️ WHO IT'S FOR
This class is for beginner to intermediate sewers. Maybe you remember sewing years ago but want to brush up on your skills, maybe you've never sewn before but you want to bring some of your wardrobe back to life. Either way, we cover the fundamentals of sewing while ensuring there's ample time for creativity and refining skills so you can repair garments and create at home.
*All of our courses are designed to meet you at your current skill level. If you're new to sewing, we will guide you through fundamental processes. If you're more experienced, we can push you for a more complex design and manufacturing process.
✂️ TEACHING STYLE
This curriculum of this course are structured as a framework to allow the decisions, materials and designs to be made by you and guided by us.
Our tailored teaching process is designed to prompt creativity and help guide you through the bag design process. From creative inception right through to finishing your last seam, we will guide you step by step through the process so you're confident to go out upcycling on your own.

This course is also available online... if you sign up for the in person version, you will also gain access to the online instructional videos and tutorials so you can refer back to the learnings to repeat the process again and again.
🚀 FIVE WEEK FORMAT
In person bag making courses are 2 hours per week for 5 weeks. Choose from Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday evenings. There is one INTO facilitator per five students, so we can each get lot of one-on-one time with the experts :)
- Class runs 6.30pm-8.30pm
- 5 Weeks of 2 hour classes
- No prior sewing skills required (but plz tell us if you've not sewn before)
- We have an abundance of waste here but BYO waste material is welcomed
- Each student will have their own sewing machine to practice on (you're welcome to BYO machine)
♻️ WASTE MATERIALS
We have a LOT of overlooked materials here at the studio. If you have a particular material you would like to upcycle, please bring it in! We love exploring new materials. Otherwise, we have an abundance of banners, denim, sleeping bags, upholstery fabric, tarps, workwear and other random goodies here. Note: if you would like to use soft plastic in your design, you can create your own at home with ouronline tutorialand bring it into class (you won't need this material until week 3).

Included in the $399 ticket is five weeks of classes, valued at $140 per class, hardware for strap connections bag closures, total value of $700 for $399.

We offer a refund policy up until 7 days prior to the semester starting. If the cancellation is within this 7 day window, we will release the ticket and refund your amount pending it's resale. Who is this course for?
This is a great course to start your sewing jounrey. In the first lesson of this five week course, we cover sewing upcycling fundamentals, these exercises are perfect to learn how to sew and get up to speed. The rest of the course, there will be two expert facilitators there to guide you through your assembly process.
This course is designed to cater to all skill levels. The framework it covers has options to add more details and compelxity at every stage. Whether you're a beginner, or a seasoned veteran, this course will have you creatively reimaging existing materials into new creations.
Scheduling
This happens often and is not an issue... If you can't make one of the five session, we can slot you into one the alternative days (Mon, Tues, Wed) for that week. Or we can make the time up in prior or upcoming weeks. Email luke@intocarry.co to organise the exact details.
