The most rewarding part is seeing a finished bag, standing strong, looking sexy af and knowing a few hours ago, that was an overlooked, discarded pile of scrap material.
Material Awareness
It's easy to move through our day without recognising the relationship we have with the materials we interact with. From sushi soy fishies, to expensive leather shoes... we're subconsciously logging each materials, deciding their value and dealing with them accordingly.
In the black and white, learning upcycling techniques empowers us to make stuff from things that already. The added bonus is the expansion of our material awareness. Once we begin using overlooked materials, we don't see the sushi soy fish in the same way, that could used in our next soft plastic upcycling experiment. Or we recognise the shape of leather on our shoe and imagine it wrapping the contours of our next bag creation.
By learning to upcycle, we're not only keeping material out of landfill, we're changing our relationship with the material world we live in.
Functional Techniques
As we learn new techniques, we interpret their possible application from our own perspective. The more techniques we have, the more material awareness we have, the more creative possibilities we see for material upcycling. Kind of like a Jim Collins Flywheel, but for upcycling, creativity and environmental impact.
