We all go to a lot of effort to source the right materials for the right projects. The nature of the beast is after we've used the materials, we're left with rogue, random pieces filling up our scrap bins. So what can we do with these beautiful mishaped scraps?
Here's three easy to learn and epicly creative methods to create high quality bags from your scrap bin.
1. Seam Stack
This is a pearler technique to use some of the medium-sized scraps you have sitting around. Key tips are to try and pair materials with similar textures and properties so your new sheet feels and moves consistently, and create depth in the new panel by using just a few really small tiny pieces to give some hierarchy. Check out the video below for the full step by step.
2. Top Stitch Collage
This is such an epic technique to use the scrappiest of scraps. This piece of denim used in the sample below had been stripped of any working surface areas to create other pieces. Then, by pulling apart the seams and top stitching each panel (no matter how big or small) onto a base layer, we've always shocked at how much surface area you can create with scraps like this.
A tip for the application of this new material... because the edges are exposed, we have quite a raw and rough texture and aesthetic going on. To sharpen the quality of the bag, use high quality, clean edge finishes and materials for the rest of the bag. Having a contrast of high quality and raw exposed edge finishes says to the person viewing "hey, I'm actually pretty handy at this whole sewing thing, I just decided to leave those edges exposed on purpose".
3. Appliqué / Reverse Appliqué Panel
If you've been following Into Carry for a while, you'll know we're obsesses with Reverse Appliqué. It's like painting with a sewing machine. You get to create all these wonderful forms and shapes, and layer them on top of each other with different textures and colours... it's such an epic and rewarding process. It can be tedious and it can test your patience, but once you get the hang of it, it opens up a whole world of creative possibilities... you'll never look at a pile of scraps the same again.
So there it is, our three favourite ways to bring scraps back to life... what's your experience? Do you have any epic techniques you love to employ to revive your scrap bin? Drop them in the comments below!
